HERITAGE CONSERVATION:
THEORIES, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES

A module that really gave me a hands-on understanding of the principles, theories, and methods involved in documenting and conserving heritage. This module emphasized why preserving cultural and architectural heritage is so important and helped me appreciate its historical and cultural value. I got to learn about different approaches to heritage conservation, like conservation, restoration, and reconstruction, all within a historical and cultural context. By the end of it, I felt like I had a solid grasp of the processes and management strategies involved in heritage conservation. The module also gave me opportunities to apply what I learned through practical assignments and projects, with assessments designed to check both my understanding and performance.

Throughout the semester, there were two main assessments:

  1. Assignment 1: Cultural Mapping and Site Study

  2. Final Project: Heritage and Conservation Proposal

Both assignments gave me the chance to practice and improve my skills in documenting, analyzing, and proposing solutions for heritage conservation. They aligned well with the module’s learning objectives and really helped deepen my understanding of the subject.

PROJECT 1 : CULTURAL MAPPING AND SITE STUDY

This assignment was split into two parts: a group project (30%) and an individual analysis (20%). For the group part, we worked together to do cultural mapping and a site study on a heritage street in Kuala Lumpur. This included digging into the hidden cultural narratives, looking at the site’s historical and architectural context, and analyzing a selected heritage building. We presented maps, plans, street elevations, timelines, and significant values, all supported by ICOMOS and JWN principles, and included suggestions for conservation.

For the individual part, I analyzed two precedent studies of buildings that were similar in size or condition to the one we studied. This focused on conservation methods, how well they followed charters, and practical applications. The deliverable was a slide presentation where I compared and drew conclusions from both studies.

PROJECT 2 : HERITAGE AND CONSERVATION PROPOSAL

the final project, I created a Heritage & Conservation and Adaptive Reuse Proposal for the same heritage building from CULTURAL MAPPING AND SITE STUDY. This involved coming up with a conservation approach for the building’s facade and proposing adaptive reuse ideas to keep it relevant and functional in a modern context. I conducted a detailed analysis of the building’s current condition and researched various conservation methods to ensure the preservation of its architectural and cultural significance. Additionally, I proposed practical adaptive reuse strategies that align with contemporary needs while respecting the building’s historical essence. To support my proposal, I incorporated insights from ICOMOS and JWN guidelines and studied at least two precedent cases. These precedent studies offered valuable examples of successful conservation and adaptive reuse projects, which helped refine my approach and strengthen the overall proposal.

REFLECTION

This module was a truly eye-opening and transformative experience for me. It seamlessly combined theoretical knowledge with practical applications, allowing me to gain a comprehensive understanding of heritage conservation. From cultural mapping to adaptive reuse, each aspect of the module highlighted the complexities and nuances involved in preserving historical and architectural heritage.

Working on the group assignment taught me the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and collaboration, as we pieced together cultural narratives and site analyses. The individual components, on the other hand, pushed me to dive deeper into independent research, critical thinking, and detailed analysis. Both assignments collectively gave me the confidence to approach heritage conservation projects with a balanced perspective, blending respect for historical authenticity with innovative, functional solutions for modern usage.

I am particularly grateful for the guidance and constructive feedback provided by my lecturers throughout the semester. Their insights helped me refine my understanding of conservation principles and adapt my ideas to align with professional standards like ICOMOS and JWN. This module also instilled in me a greater appreciation for the intricate relationship between heritage and community, inspiring me to contribute meaningfully to the field in the future. Overall, it has equipped me with valuable skills, knowledge, and a deeper passion for heritage conservation that I am excited to carry forward into my career.
