BUILDING CONSTRUCTION & MATERIALS
In the Building Construction and Materials module, we explored the fundamental principles of construction, focusing on the design and assembly of small to medium-scale building projects. The course provided a comprehensive understanding of both substructure and superstructure elements, emphasizing how these components work together to create stable and functional buildings. We examined key materials such as concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and glass, studying their manufacturing processes, properties, and typical applications in construction. This exploration gave us valuable insights into how different materials contribute to a building's integrity and aesthetic. The module was interactive, with continuous assessments through assignments, tutorials and final examination that challenged us to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts. This hands-on approach solidified our understanding of construction methods and material selection, equipping us with the skills needed for real-world architectural design and construction.
ASSIGNMENT 01
Material Experience in Architecture
Our first assignment was a group project carrying 30% weightage. We were introduced to the practical application of building materials in architectural design. Our task was to conduct an in-depth case study on a notable building located in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. The building we chose for our research was The Mont Kiara Retail Mall, Kuala Lumpur. Working in a group of seven, we were required to identify and analyze five architectural building materials and two structural building materials used in the chosen building. The project also focused on understanding the experiential impact of one specific material on end users, highlighting its role within the space. Additionally, we were asked to provide a detailed illustration of the installation process for the selected material. The final outcome of our study was to be presented on a single A1-sized board, organized and submitted online, allowing us to demonstrate our comprehension of material selection, application, and construction techniques.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Reflecting on our first assignment, I found the experience of working on the Mont Kiara Retail Mall case study both challenging and rewarding. Collaborating with my team of seven allowed us to pool our knowledge and skills, enabling a thorough analysis of the architectural and structural building materials used in the mall's construction. This project deepened my appreciation for the critical role that material selection plays in shaping not just the physical structure, but also the overall user experience within a space.
The task of identifying and analyzing the materials required us to engage deeply with the building's design, leading to a greater understanding of how each material contributes to the aesthetics, functionality, and atmosphere of the mall. Focusing on one material's experiential impact was particularly enlightening, as it highlighted the subtle ways in which design choices can influence how people interact with and feel within a space.
I’m grateful for the cooperative spirit of my teammates, who brought diverse perspectives and ideas to the table, making our research more comprehensive. Additionally, I appreciate our tutor’s insightful feedback, which guided us in refining our analysis and presentation. This assignment has not only enhanced my understanding of building materials but also reinforced the importance of collaboration and critical thinking in architectural design.
ASSIGNMENT 2
Construction Details – Integration with ADII
For our final assignment, which accounts for 40% of our grade, we are tasked with demonstrating our understanding of building construction through detailed manual drawings and model-making. The assignment emphasizes the intricate detailing of building elements, underscoring the vital connection between design creativity and technical knowledge. We are required to create a construction section detail from roof to foundation and a physical 'cake slice' model at a scale of 1:25, both of which will be integral to our Architectural Design II (ADII) project. Additionally, we must develop a special construction detail at a scale of 1:10. These components will be included in our final ADII presentation board, challenging us to effectively integrate construction methods, structural elements, and material selection into our designs, highlighting the importance of technical precision in successful architectural projects.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
Reflecting on this final assignment, I realize how much it has deepened my understanding of the intricate relationship between design and construction. The task of creating detailed drawings and a physical model challenged me to think critically about the technical aspects of my design, pushing me to go beyond aesthetic considerations and focus on the practicalities of building. Working on the construction section from roof to foundation, and developing a special detail, required a careful analysis of how each element would function together, ensuring both stability and coherence in the overall structure.
The process of translating my Architectural Design II (ADII) project into detailed construction drawings was particularly enlightening. It allowed me to see how essential it is to integrate structural elements and select materials thoughtfully, not just for the success of the design but for its feasibility in the real world. The hands-on experience of building the 'cake slice' model gave me a tangible sense of how my design would come to life, reinforcing the importance of precision and attention to detail.
I am grateful for the insights this assignment provided, and I feel more confident in my ability to merge creative design with technical execution. The feedback from my tutor was invaluable, helping me refine my work and guiding me toward a more comprehensive understanding of architectural construction. This assignment has undoubtedly strengthened my skills and prepared me for future challenges in architectural design.
